Aegis Energy Services, Inc. develops CHP project for Boston hotel group
CHP helps Saunders Hotel Group reach sustainability goals
The Saunders Hotel Group, a third generation family- owned and operated hotel management business, is achieving long-standing sustainability goals with a Combined Heat and Power system installed and operated by Aegis Energy Services.
“This was our first endeavor into this technology, so we were apprehensive about many aspects,” said Scot Hopps, Director of Sustainability for the Saunders Group. “What remained consistent and really kept the project moving forward despite our concerns was the well-founded confidence Aegis had.”
The Saunders Hotel Group maintains a portfolio of properties that includes Boston’s Lenox Hotel and the Boston Common Hotel and Conference Center. The company is rooted in its commitment to sustainability and maintaining a minimal footprint by creating, practicing, and integrating leading environmental initiatives into its daily operations and long term strategies.
In late 2012, the company began looking at Combined Heat and Power.
“As most companies do, we looked at a variety of manufacturers and implementation models – own it, lease it, PPA, etc.,” said Hopps. “One thing was clear early on in the process; Aegis was confident in their engineering and financial analysis. They were the only company that dove deep enough into the building to understand if cogen would be a good fit.”
The cogen system was installed in the Comfort Inn & Suites Boston/Logan Airport, a 208 room hotel that has received Choice Hotels’ Platinum Award, and has earned Gold status on Trip Advisor’s Green Leaders program.
Founded in 1985, Aegis Energy Services, Inc. is a full service Combined Heat and Power developer that utilizes modular systems to reduce both energy costs and emissions for a variety of facilities, from healthcare and assisted living facilities, to recreational and multi-residential complexes, and hotels. There are also institutional, educational, and industrial facility applications.
“To their credit, the installation went as they described it would,” said Hopps. “We received the incentives and credits that they informed us we would, and the process was painless to us and did not interrupt our business which, as a hotel, is 24/7/365.”
The Combined Heat and Power system that Aegis installed for the Saunders Hotel Group is reaping savings rewards for the company.
“I can confidently say that our expectations are being met month after month,” said Hopps. “I know full well that weather will vary from the year that we modeled our results on, and utility rates will rise and fall. However we are almost a year into operation and we are very satisfied with our decision to install cogen, and even more satisfied with having Aegis as our partner in this process.”
